Jon Sobrino, S.J.

Con gran tristeza recibí esta mañana la noticia de que el teólogo Jesuita latinoamericano Jon Sobrino ha estado bajo investigación doctrinaria de parte de la Congregación para la Doctrina de la Fé del Vaticano. Cabe agregar que el 10 de Marzo varios periódicos españoles anunciaron que tanto él como el Superior General de la Orden Jesuita han decidido no apelar la condena, que será hecha pública en el transcurso de esta semana. Resulta difícil predecir el efecto que tendrá esta sentencia en Jon Sobrino, frágil y enfermo, toda vez que se le prohíbe escribir y hablar en público sobre su teología.

La acusación principal consiste en que él no ha recalcado lo suficiente en sus escritos la divinidad de Cristo, poniendo demasiado énfasis en el Jesús histórico y el Jesús de la historia.

He estudiado su teología y escribí un capítulo completo sobre su vida y teología para el 2ª volumen de “Historia y política de la teología latinoamericana”, SCM Press, 2007. Él continúa siendo un amigo muy querido y un ejemplo de compromiso con los pobres y marginados en El Salvador, su tierra de adopción. Toda su comunidad jesuita de la Universidad Centroamericana fue asesinada el 16 de noviembre de 1989, y a pesar de eso él volvió a El Salvador y continuó su trabajo teológico.

La condena del Vaticano es particularmente desalentadora cuando todos los obispos latinoamericanos se aprestan a participar en la 5ª Reunión General de la Conferencia Episcopal Latinoamericana, que tendrá lugar en mayo en la ciudad brasileña de Aparecida. El Papa Benedicto XVI abrirá dicha Conferencia. Cabe recordar que cuando él aún era el Cardenal Ratzinger, humilló a Gustavo Gutiérrez y a Leonardo Boff de manera similar. Pido su solidaridad con Jon, en nombre de Gustavo y de otros que como yo estamos conmocionados por tal circunstancia.

Jon Sobrino ha decidido no defenderse; está demasiado cansado y enfermo como para desafiar esas acusaciones, aún teniendo el respaldo absoluto de sus hermanos jesuitas.

It is with great sadness that I received the news this morning that the Latin American theologian and Jesuit Jon Sobrino SJ has been under doctrinal investigation by the Vatican Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. Further, on the 10th March several Spanish newspapers announced that he and the Jesuit Superior General have decided not to appeal to such condemnation that will be made public this week. The effect on a frail and ill Sobrino would be difficult to predict but he has been forbidden from writing and speaking in public about his theology. The main accusation is that he has not stressed enough in his writing the divinity of Christ and has put too much emphasis on the historical Jesus and the Jesus of history.

I have studied his theology and have written a full chapter on his life and theology for volume II of The History and Politics of Latin American Theology, SCM Press, 2007. He remains a dear friend and an example of commitment to the poor and the marginalized in El Salvador, his land of adoption. He had all his Jesuit community at the University of Central America assassinated on the 16th November 1989 and despite that he returned to El Salvador and to his theological work.

The condemnation by the Vatican is particularly disheartening as all the Latin American Bishops prepare to gather at Aparecida, Brazil, for the 5th General Meeting of the Latin American Episcopal Conference in May. Pope Benedict XVI, previously Cardinal Ratzinger, who humiliated Gustavo Gutiérrez and Leonardo Boff in the same manner, will open the conference. I ask for your solidarity with Jon, on behalf of Gustavo and others who like me are in shock. Jon Sobrino has decided not to defend himself and he is too tired and ill to challenge those accusations while he has the full backing of the Jesuits.
